Our Moon Maps are generated using a multi-stage astronomical model that accounts for orbital mechanics, observer location, illumination geometry, atmospheric effects, and physical visibility. Using precise astronomical data, we calculate the Moon’s orbital position, distance, and altitude above the horizon for the selected date and location. The Moon is then rendered as a three-dimensional body to accurately position the terminator line (the boundary between light and shadow), surface shading, and orientation relative to the observer. To avoid showing a theoretical phase that may not have been visible, we calculate the moment of lunar culmination, when the Moon reaches its highest point in the sky for the chosen location, and render the Moon at that moment.
